The largest city on the island's west coast, Mayaguez is a charming, elegant port city and a convenient place to stay while exploring Puerto Rico's west coast. The town dates back to the mid-eighteenth century, but most of its stately buildings were destroyed in an earthquake in 1918. Known by some as the honeymoon capital of Puerto Rico, many tradition-minded Puerto Rican couples continue to go there on their honeymoons, but most international visitors would not view it as the ideal honeymoon spot. Possibly one of the bigger draws to the area is the casinos. The island is also a paradise for bird watchers. Places of interest include the Mayaguez Tropical Research Station and the Mayaguez Zoo with plenty of flora and fauna to hold one's interest along with hiking and even a nearby golf course.
