Pompei, famed for its famous destruction by the massive Mount Vesuvius in the year AD79, has become a major tourist attraction in recent years due to revived interested in the archaeological findings and geological importance of the site. Luckily, the town lays close to the modern-day city of Naples, in Italy. For over 1700 years, the city was buried under meters of ash, dirt, and pumice, and was discovered only by accident in the year 1748.
