Points positifs: Excellent buffet breakfast & dinner. Ski in. Staff were excellent, very friendly & helpful. Very clean, everything worked. Very comfortable. We were lucky to be able to access festival shuttle buses to explore the surrounding area - normally this would not be possible.
Points négatifs: Ski field is a little limited in scope. Hotel location is a bit isolated - public transport options are a bit limited.
8,0 Excellent

Points positifs: The onsen is very traditionally Japanese, every expectation was met.
Points négatifs: The onsen is situated a bit apart from everything else.
7,9 Bien
Points positifs: Absolutely stunning area. Very charming hostel with a wonderful hot spring bath. The staff were wonderful and very accommodating of my inability to speak Japanese.
Points négatifs: Smoking was allowed in the building. As a non smoker, I wasn't happy about that. The people in the room below me were smoking heavily and my roomed stank of cigarettes as a result. Comes with the traditional aesthetic of the place, suppose. The hostel is also located in the middle of nowhere, 5km from any grocery store, so bring food with you.
9,2 Excellent
Points positifs: Set in the most peaceful and beautiful valley about an hour's bus ride from Morioka station. The menshuku is run by Mrs Ito and her son who very kindly to came to Shizukuishi station to pick me up as I arrived late. They were wonderfully friendly and accommodating. Rustic but with old world charm.
Points négatifs: I like old but it is not to everyone's taste
8,3 Excellent
Points positifs: It was in a great location for our needs and the futon was clean and comfortable. Staff was very friendly and easy to talk with.
Points négatifs: There were a lot of insects in my room. Everything was pretty old, too.

9,6 Excellent
Points positifs: The staff was super helpful and kind. The facilities were wonderful and it felt like staying in a 5 star luxury hotel. The onsen was FABULOUS. Such a relaxing stay!!!
Points négatifs: The location was not optimal. If you are looking to get away from everything and stay in this is a great place, but if you intend on traveling around you won’t be able to due to the timing of the schedules
9,0 Excellent
Points positifs: English speaking staff from France, Sebastien who arranged free shuttle from and to Shizukuishi Station for us party of six. He even translated the dinner menu into English and explained each dish for us. He served us well until the end of the dinner. We enjoyed ourselves very much. Thank him very much. We would like to thank the young lady from Vietnam who checked us in and showed us around nicely.

Points positifs: Excellent meals. The staff, especially Sebastien, were really helpful
10,0 Excellent
Points positifs: Awesome hospitality, Sebastian was very helpful for us non-Japanese guests. We enjoyed our stay so much that we would love to return again and visit. We stayed for three nights in our two weeks trip to Japan. We are all very satisfied and glad to have chosen Choeikan Oushuku Onsen for our stay.
8,0 Excellent
Points positifs: Their breakfast and dinner's were amazing. Went for an apple pie in the lobby, and staff gave a box of bits from the apple pie pastry, they tasted better than the pie! Room was spacious and comfortable. Staff could not speak much english but they tried their best.
Points négatifs: Location is a bit away from anything. That can be a good thing. But reliant on the shuttle if you do not have a car. Not many shops or restaurants to browse nearby. No walking trails provided.
10,0 Excellent
Points positifs: The facilities, including the traditional onsen, were beyond my expectations. Sebastian was a wonderful host who along with all the staff really helped to make my stay a truly memorable experience.
9,2 Excellent
Points positifs: The rooms are big in compare with similar onsen hotels that we had stayed during this trip but at a lower price. Dinner and breakfast were included. The food quality was excellent. Moreover, the rooms were very clean and comfortable not to mention the high quality onsen. Credit must be given to the altitude of the staff. They were friendly, helpful and proactive in serving and helping all customers. One more point, the 2 sessions of mini music show (40 min and 30 min respectively) after dinner were bonus. We (a group of six adults staying 2 nights) all enjoy our stay.
Points négatifs: Not much shops nearby especially after sunset.
9,2 Excellent
9,0 Excellent
Points positifs: Secluded and quiet with a nice airy and large Onsen and Sauna. The hotel was classically Japanese and very clean and comfortable in the way only a Japanese ryokan/Onsen hotel can be.
Points négatifs: Nothing to dislike.

Points positifs: This Ryokan is situated at the end of the famous Morioka onsen street near the top of a small hill. Entrace is a very typical Ryokan where you will need to remove your shoes right away and friendly host will greet you right away and help you with luggage and check-in. Once we were brought to our room our host served us with fresh hot green tea with some snack. Accommodation here all include Kaiseki dinner and breakfast and they were absolutely FABULOUS! Not excessive and just the right portion the dinner included appetizer, aperitif, at least 5 types of small entrees based on different cooking methods and followed by dessert and fruit. Breakfast was smaller in the number of dishes but nonetheless delicious, plus there's also a small section of buffet area where you can self-serve all the tofu, milk, apple juice and rice/congee you'd like. Room was not as big as I anticipated but well partitioned with a carpeted table area where you can sit by the window and relax or read with a cup of hot tea. This is quite unusual in a Japanese tatami room. Staff at the Ryokan were all friendly and there was also a small gift shop and most importantly a 24 hour hot spring. Overall this was a very nice and cozy place that's suitable to bring you loved one here to enjoy some quiet, romantic times.
Points négatifs: Outdoor hot spring pool temperature a bit too low it felt only lukewarm....

Points positifs: The counter and service staff were very helpful in helping us contact the transport company and arrange our transport to the snow park we planned to visit. They also provided exceptional service in arranging for an item we left behind to be sent to us, and provided the necessary transport.
Points négatifs: We booked the room with private open air bath. The steps to the bath were a bit slippery - may need to be scrubbed.

10,0 Excellent
Points positifs: My friends and I met here for our annual reunion, and we're already talking about returning. WOW. I don't know where to begin. We had a wonderful experience from start to finish. Definitely one of the best, if not THE best, ryokans we have stayed at. The host greeted us in the parking lot and carried the ladies' bags from the car, during check-in, and to the room. And the room-I can't remember the last time I actually wow'd out loud when walking into a hotel room. We were all delighted and were giving our praise to the host before he had a chance to step into the room himself. Everything seemed so fresh, cozy and clean. The entire hotel had a similar atmosphere and there was absolutely no trace of the warn-down feeling so many other onsen hotels and ryokan suffer from. The hospitality was exceptional. Every single staff member we ran into was warm and friendly and would try to converse in English if they could, which is a little unusual in the Tohoku backwoods. When a fireworks show started at a resort nearby, the staff ran through the building to gather the guests so we could watch it, too. Because the ryokan wasn't crowded (which was surprising to me. How could such a fine place ever NOT be full?) my friend and I had the baths, which were lovely, clean, and just the right temperature, to ourselves. An unexpected treat! The food (traditional local fare at both meals) was great at both dinner and breakfast. One thing we appreciated was that breakfast was buffet, or "viking" style. Great for those who may not enjoy every single piece of a traditional Japanese breakfast. As we left, we were able to greet the resident shiba, Cocoa.
Points négatifs: The ONE thing I could mention, and it really wasn't a big deal, is that the doors into the room are paper (there is a wooden grate that locks), so you can hear everything and everyone in the common area. Not so great for me, a light sleeper, but the other members of my party didn't seem to mind. For the most part though, the other guests were courteous when moving around in the common areas and weren't too noisy!

7,5 Bien
Points positifs: We stayed three nights at the resort, I guess due to the virus we didn’t have too many other guests which was pretty awesome! Dinner Buffett - It was great for the first time since they have the Namahage show on the first night at 6:45pm but you kind of get sick of it on the second and third night because they don’t change the varieties. Onsen - Onsen was pretty good, they have three pools and sauna and closing time is at 11pm quite late so we enjoyed our onsen every single night. Staff - Friendly, professional but English could be a bit better since we did struggle a bit with a few staff members in communication.
Points négatifs: Only I can complaint about is the varieties on the Buffett otherwise all good!
9,6 Excellent
Points positifs: Staff very helpful at check in They rang an interpreter to help us find our way the Island The hotel was very clean and modern looking
8,0 Excellent
Points positifs: free shuttle bus to Lake side and JR station
10,0 Excellent
8,0 Excellent
Points positifs: Spacious room, pet friendly, generous heating facilities in room (very important as it was snowing heavily when we arrived), excellent indoor and outdoor Onsen baths! Dinner and breakfast buffets were good. Decent variety and quality of seasonal local fare. Families with kids could borrow sets of toy spades and buckets for snow play.
Points négatifs: Not much information on website about getting to the hotel from train station. Email was not answered by hotel staff. But when we called the hotel finally, one of the staff members told us about the complimentary shuttle service.
6,7 Bien
8,3 Excellent
Points positifs: Near tazawako lake Clean and modern new hotel
6,7 Bien
Points positifs: Stayed 4 nights. First 2 nights in the refreshed premier room. Fresh room renovation makes it a joy to stay. Toilet didn’t get the refresh which is a pity. Good spread of buffet breakfast and dinner. 1st 2 nights we stayed the hotel was relatively quiet probably because it is the weekday. 2 different Onsen that rotate between the male and female gender.
Points négatifs: Polite and helpful staff, wanted to switch back to the premier room on the last night as there appears to be a last minute vacancy but staff wasn’t aware, probably a rigid staff protocol issue but not uncommon in Japan. Limited shuttle timing, if you miss the last shuttle bus or the local bus (6pm), taxi ride is 3000 yen from the train station. Bed is new but a bit stiff. The pillow selection is strange and didn’t contribute to a good sleep.
6,3 Bien
Points positifs: Split booking into 2 different rooms as the premium room wasn’t available for 4 consecutive nights. Got the pet friendly room for the size for the final 2 nights. Inclusive of buffet breakfast and dinner. Always friendly and polite staff. Room is renovated and fairly new. 3 shuttle bus timings to the Tazawako station or to the lake stop itself in the morning and 3 back from the station is necessary it is probably at least an hour walk if you are quick. Lounge area is comfortable and has free flow of hot and cold beverage until 9pm. Dinner has an option of free flow house pour for 3 set timing and is a favorite for avid drinkers.
Points négatifs: There is a strong odour in the room that suggest that the room hasn’t been used for a while. The room was renovated but not the toilet and toilet also has a strong urea odour. Resorted to getting an air fresher to combat the odours. Towards the end of the stay the Katakuri onsen shower area started flooding probably due to the sheer number of tour groups guests going through the facility. The onsen shower floor is slippery (from the flooding and the grime) and is a matter of time before someone hurt themselves. The rest of the property will need a renovation as well not just from comfort point of view but also safety.

Points positifs: The hotel is right next to the Kakunodate station. Samurai district was about a 10 min walk from the hotel. There is a nice supermarket and Daiso store in the mall on the other side of the train track. Takes about a 15mins walk to get to but, worth it.

8,3 Excellent
8,0 Excellent
Points positifs: Location just near Kakunodate train station. Turn left and you find the hotel. Large room . The washing machine was very convenient. The food in the attached restaurant was good and reasonably priced No noise from the train The staff helpful

Points positifs: Delicious and nutritious Japanese dinners and breakfasts, fabulous onsens and the staff were lovely and extremely helpful. The Japanese style rooms were spacious, comfortable futons, warm and inviting. The shuttle bus to the front door of the ski field made our stay easy and enjoyable. Would recommend without hesitation.

Points positifs: Good onsen hotel with nice onsen facilities. Spacious and beautiful Japanese tatami room with excellent wide window view. Bus stop right in front of the hotel.

Points positifs: The breakfast and location was great!
Points négatifs: The bathroom/shower area had a very unpleasant smell. Needed cleaning.
8,0 Excellent
Points positifs: The room was beautiful Japanese style and lovely and warm after coming in from the snow outside. We had a huge window with a nice view of outside. The staff were always friendly and let us borrow a shovel and a sled at different times for free. The hotel was almost completely empty aside from us throughout the week and was only busy on Saturday night. (Febuary) The hotel has a nice large onsen for guests to use and a semi outdoor bath as well which was lovely although not sparkling clean (we felt this made it more authentic though). The Nyuto Onsen village is only a short bus ride away and the bus pulls up right outside the hotel. It was also easy to get to and from the train station by bus. We felt that by staying here we got the value of a much more expensive hotel but at a price we could afford.
Points négatifs: There are no options to order dinner within walking distance after 5.30pm so you have to pay for the expensive meal at the hotel (about 3000Y) and it has to be reserved the morning of the day or you can't get it and there's nothing to eat except cup noodles. There are no convenience stores or anything within walking distance (nearest is 4km down the mountain).
6,7 Bien
Points positifs: The location was magical
Points négatifs: Facilities were dated. Lack of catering for dinner was inconvenient (however breakfast was good).

Points positifs: Located a stone's throw from the slopes, this traditional Japanese ryokan met all of our needs and then some. The people were friendly, the food was fantastic and room was comfortable. What more could you want after a day on the slopes?
Points négatifs: There was nothing not to like about this place. If you aren't happy with shared bathrooms, don't stay here, but other than that, there is nothing not to like.

Points positifs: Extra ordinary onsen and rock bath with that can’t be found elsewhere. Staff are really nice and willing to help. Even the room is a bit old but it was clean. A bit far with an hour of bus travel from train station, but scenery is stunning
7,1 Bien
Points positifs: in the middle of the forest, very quite!! The food was good e the service very efficient
Points négatifs: apart from one person, a very nice waitress, no one could speak a decent English. The staff didn’t really know the area and wasn’t able to give me advice for hiking path, ( it was suppose to be an area with many hiking routes ) I felt frustasted. The Hotel didn’t have a nice open area to rest and enjoy the surranding nature

7,1 Bien
Points positifs: Incredible location in the mountains with a very special onsen. Just make sure you have a view of something other than the car park from your room. Decent half board.
Points négatifs: No air conditioning in the room and the view of the car park from our room where very disappointing. Especially considering the jacked up room price for the obon holiday.
9,2 Excellent
Points positifs: In the middle of natural area. Good to stay if you want natural view, fresh air and quiet.
Points négatifs: No

9,6 Excellent
Points positifs: The staff was super helpful and kind. The facilities were wonderful and it felt like staying in a 5 star luxury hotel. The onsen was FABULOUS. Such a relaxing stay!!!
Points négatifs: The location was not optimal. If you are looking to get away from everything and stay in this is a great place, but if you intend on traveling around you won’t be able to due to the timing of the schedules
