Points négatifs: Facilities are limited. The nearest gym is a 10 minute car ride away. There is no bar or lounge to speak of. The restaurant reservations service is somewhat rigid and geared towards tourist oriented establishments (as opposed to eateries frequented by locals)

Points positifs: L’emplacement, le confort des chambres, la déco, l’ambiance du bar, propreté irréprochable, les lits fabuleux, le shuttle de l’hôtel pour la gare, le bain public très sympa.
Points négatifs: Le personnel parle très mal anglais, la difficulté et la lenteur pour se faire comprendre ( prévoir 15 minutes pour chaque demande ou le Check out, tres compliqué de faire réserver un restaurant par l’hôtel pour une famille nombreuse etc). Les consommations au bar sont très chères avec des doses minuscules. Prévoir de réserver sa place en avance pour le petit-déjeuner sous peine de se retrouver en liste d’attente. Manque un sauna dans le bain public.

Points positifs: The design of the hostel was very inviting. The rooftop was a good place to hangout except that it was really cold. The staff are very helpful and friendly. It was also a plus that they prepared a little breakfast for guests who will go out earlier than breakfast time. When I go back to Kyoto, I would definitely book at Piece Hostel or in their other properties.

Points négatifs: A disturbing detail is the automatic light in the entrance that can not be turned off. If you get up at night you will certainly wake up your room mate.

Points positifs: This was our favourite place we stayed on our 3 week trip. The Hostel is pretty big, with a large coffee/tea restaurant area on the lower floor (with an amazing living wall)- where a good breakfast is served, and in the evening you can bring your own food there, eg. the great value sushi platters you can buy around the corner. There is a large rooftop area, laundry rooms and a sort of pampering area (including those amazing Dyson hair dryers!) We were so glad we booked 5 nights as we just wanted to spend days chilling there to edit our photos! The staff are extra friendly and provide a very useful map of local locations as well as restaurants listed by food type eg sushi or ramen. The location is just fantastic, makes all the difference that you can just walk over to Gion area whenever you fancy to spot a Geisha. The room was equal to any good hotel with a very comfortable, large bed.
Points négatifs: If I had to say something it would be to provide a tiny bit more clothes storage. Though it must be said, this hostel had the most storage of anywhere on our three week trip! The hooks they had were so handy, these are so often lacking in hostels and hotels!

Le centre, les restaurants, les quartiers de Gion et Ponto Cho... sont accessibles à pied (ce qui n'est pas négligeable pour une ville où le principal moyen de transport est le bus... avec des embouteillages). La présence de machines à laver et à sécher le linge. La mise à disposition du bar pour les occupants de l'hôtel (WiFi, sièges, tables... avec eau froide à disposition)

Points positifs: The room is clean and comfortable. Although there is no bathroom inside, the shared one is big and clean. The shared kitchen and dinning area is spacious. You can cook simple food. There’s also bicycle renting service which is only 500 yen per day. Cycling in Kyoto is great and more convenience than taking public transport to those temples.

Points positifs: The service is excellent with helpful staffs. The design is simple but is comfortable. The room is not big but clean and comforting. The location is very close to the Kyoto station and many convenient stores and restaurants nearby. If you like travelling by bike, there is bike rental for only 500 yens a day. I will recommend this hostel to my friends.

Points positifs: Pour ma seconde visite, Piece Hostel Kyoto était tout aussi parfait que durant mon premier séjour. Un personnel très sympathique et aux petits soins, ils vous aideront à organiser votre séjour à Kyoto, car il y a de quoi occuper ses journées, croyez-moi! Un dortoir confortable avec lampe, prise USB et rideau pour chaque lit, des douches et toilettes régulièrement entretenus, une salle commune agréable, des activités organisées comme la soirée takoyaki ou okonomiyaki, à proximité directe de la gare de Kyoto... Bref, c'était parfait et je recommande !

Points positifs: The room is small, but the bed - wow, the BED WAS SO COMFY! The compartment for your luggage underneath your bed is also pretty nifty and such a good way to save space! I love the location too - it was so near shopping areas. The staff all speak english so it was such an easy process.
Points négatifs: The dryer. I don't know if it's spoiled, but my laundry went through at least 10 cycles but my clothes were still sopping wet! I spent more than 1k yen on the machine, and ended up having to dry/hang my clothes in my already cramped room. I had to be innovative about it.

Points positifs: The capsule itself was spacious and had plenty of secure storage. Bathroom facilities were nice and clean but not the best amenities compared to other capsules I have stayed at.

L'espace rangement à portée de main est un plus (cela évite de mettre sa valise dans un placard comme ds les autres capsules hôtels). - Douches et toilettes propres. - Bien placé, grande rue animée et commerçante, mais loin de la gare JR de Kyoto (prendre le métro 260¥) ou bus. - Personnel serviable - Grand espace pour se poser et manger vos trouvailles au Konbini du coin ;-) - Je recommande pour une ou deux nuit

Points positifs: I loved the beds being 120cm wide! Comfortable beds too and two different size pillows which was great. Nice pull-out shelf(?) under the bed for your luggage. The common area is really nice too, great place to enjoy the complimentary coffee/hot chocolate or if you are around at the correct time - beer. Great location, so many restaurants and shops next to it. Easy to travel around places cuz of the closeness to metros and bus stops. Easy to find also. There is a tub in one of the shower rooms, was amazing to relax in hot water after a full day of walking. One nice bonus is that you get to borrow this small bag (where you get your towels at check-in) which is perfect for your stuff when heading to the shower etc.

Points positifs: Beautiful boutique hotel with gracious staff. We enjoyed a Japanese pastry making one evening where we learned how to make seasonal Manaka. The hotel does a great job at showcasing local Kyoto artists. The rooms are large and very relaxing with a traditional wooden bath and tatami mat sitting area. Service was exceptional.
Points négatifs: The location is convenient to Kyoto Station but is a bit of a walk or a quick metro to the main shopping area.

Points positifs: This is my second time staying at Hotel Kanra Kyoto. The hotel has expanded since 2012 but is as lovely as I remember it. Great convenient location to get around Kyoto (or do day trips, as it's about a 10 minute walk from the main train station). Staff is very friendly and helpful. We also booked a room with breakfast included and both the Japanese and Western breakfasts were excellent.

Points positifs: The entire staff was absolutely polite, hospitable and helpful! I erroneously booked room for two although traveling alone and receptionist notice that and they managed to amend my booking and deduct the cost! Unbelievable and happened to me first time! Location is very good, close to the shopping district and historical part however in a quiet street so no any noise from traffic etc. Hotel does have its own onsen (Japanese bath) in the basement, separated for male and female so you could use it for free. Hotel does provide special clothes and flip-flops for using in the bath. Breakfast was plentiful with local and western style of dishes, very well served.
Points négatifs: Very minor thing: the room is equipped with a device looks like a portable heater or dehumidifier. But there is no instruction provided for it. Wasn't a big issue for me as the temperature/humidity was OK but if you don't know Japanese you can't figure what's that. Anyway this is very minor and everyone could actively ask staff...

Points positifs: Tout y est parfait Super emplacement, pour un super « boutique hotel » Les chambres spacieuses pour le Japon, avec vraiment tous les gadgets qui rendent le séjour agréable. ( prise multiple pour les appareils ordi etc.. nécessaire a the café , eau, fridge efficace Salle de bain ( douche et baignoire) donnant sur la verdure, ( pas besoin d’aller dans le Onsen du sous-sol) Machines a laver au sous sol Deux onsen, un pour femmes, un pour hommes Personnel attentif, mais pas collant, parking Air conditionné efficace. Calme et Donnant pourtant sur une rue animée, quartier entre St Germain et Montmartre, nombreux restau , patisseries, plein de magasins à proximité .( je conseille le 523, juste a coté cuisine fusion Franco/japonnaise si vous etes lassés des sushis et tempuras) Station de metro et de bus tout près. Nous y sommes restés une semaine et c’était ideal pour tout faire. Nous n’avons pas pris de petit dejeuner , mais le buffet avait l’air bien consistant

Points positifs: Cet hôtel était presque neuf et pour le prix, c'était un excellent rapport qualité/prix. J'étais dans d'autres hôtels de qualité dans la région mais quand j'ai trouvé cet hôtel, je pensais que je l'aurais essayé en fonction des évaluations. Je n'ai pas été déçu - il avait l'impression d'avoir un hôtel à prix moyen aux États-Unis (je pense que le Hilton ou le Marriott) mais j'ai payé plus près de la gamme inférieure d'un hôtel à petit budget. Bien, je ne vais pas en haute saison. Les intérieurs étaient luxueux et tout était neuf. Je reviendrais ici.

Une cloison japonaise simulait une fenêtre qui n’en était pas une et à aucun moment il n’y avait la lumière du jour qui entrait dans la chambre. C’est un scandal qu’à ce niveau de prix on vous propose une chambre qui ressemble à un placard sans vous prévenir. De plus la chambre était toute petite, je n’avais pas la place d’ouvrir ma valise. J’ai changé d’hôtel tout simplement.

De plus , il n’y a pas de véritable fenêtre : il s’agit d’une fenêtre aveugle ne pouvant pas s’ouvrir et ne laissant qu’à peine entrer la lumière du jour. Lorsque j’ai réclamé à la réception , on m’a dit que toutes les chambres standards étaient ainsi et qu’il fallait régler un supplément pour bénéficier d’une chambre plus grande avec fenêtre .

Points positifs: The Onsen on the property is the reason We like to stay at this hotel. The staff if helpful and at least one person at the front desks understands English. Property is upscale so price of room is a little high. It was our third stay at this site.
Points négatifs: The washer-dryer is the combination type that does both functions and could take up to 90+ minutes to complete. There are only 2 machines and this last trip, they were in demand with not very nice guest who wanted to use the machine. Perhaps, they can add at least one more for the guests.

Points positifs: The staff were incredibly welcoming and helpful from the moment we arrived. As the hotel is quite new, all of the furnishings are in great shape. The bed is super comfortable and the dual massage and waterfall shower head is great after a long day exploring. The hotel is convenient walking distance to the downtown shopping area and an easy base to explore most popular spots in Kyoto. We will be back as soon as we can! There was plenty of room in the closet and room to store our suitcases and belongings.
Points négatifs: I kinda want to keep it to myself so it’s not booked out next time we visit! There’s no self service laundry here but the staff can provide a laundry service and there are coin laundries located around 8-10 minute walk from the hotel, so it’s not a major issue at all!

Points positifs: I walked into to Ryokan Mugen after a long commute and was welcomed into their warm embrace. The facilities were quaint but updated. The staff was extremely polite and friendly, and very knowledgeable. Meimei sat me down in their small dining entrance for the check-in process and chatted with me like a friend. She wanted to make sure I was well-oriented in Kyoto. She gave me dinner and breakfast options nearby. By the time we were done, my luggage had been put in the room and she escorted me upstairs. Fell in love with my room instantly. Perfect space for a single traveler, and comfortable facilities.

Tome-san and her staff made me feel exceptionally welcome and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure that I had a wonderful first visit to Kyoto - including provisioning me with a bicycle, map and hand warmers for the cold weather. I highly recommend this charming and wonderfully peaceful hotel, where the friendly staff give you helpful insider tips over a beer or a Japanese whisky at the bar.

Thoughtful gestures like pocket warmers, water bottles, hot drink making facilities in the room, beautiful traditional style rooms, private whisky bar in the courtyard. A beautiful ryokan that was so comfortable. We enjoyed all of it. The staff there were so warm and welcoming. They reserved a dinner spot for us at a great restaurant and went through maps with us to maximise our time in Kyoto. Tome and Minore both were outstanding and this stay is likely to be the highlight of our trip. The attention to detail of the place is wonderful. Room and en-suite were well stocked and clean. We didn’t want to leave! If we return to Kyoto we will return to Ryokan Mugen we loved it so.

Points positifs: Friendliest most helpful host that I have ever stayed with. One has to experience a Ryoken when visiting Japan. Ryoken Mugen is a great one to stay at.
Points négatifs: Looks like it caters to mostly ex pats. No Onsen on site. However there is a nice public one very nearby. These comments are really grasping at straws as the stay was so nice.

Points positifs: The staff was kind and informative. We travelled from the USA and it was our first time in Kyoto. The front desk staff provided a great orientation to the city and the important sites as well as recommendations for restaurants and shopping. The rooms are wonderful. It’s a small hotel but the level of service was huge. Loved it.
Points négatifs: I loved the location. Central to all things in Kyoto. The hotel is small and in a quiet area. It was nice to be in a quieter setting at the end of a long day of site seeing. Everything is a short walk or taxi away.

Points positifs: The hotel is located in residential area of Kyoto which allows serene atmosphere during our stay. The staffs are nice. The room is very clean and well equipped. We love the pillows and quilts. The bathroom is awesome! The hot water comes really fast and offered comprehensive bathroom equipment: facial cleansing, POLA moisture lotion/milk, various hair styling products for men. Besides, there are some nice Japanese & western breakfast restaurants near by that hotels offers all the the information. This time, the hotel gave us presents as souvenirs which we really appreciate. We highly recommend the hotel for anyone visiting Kyoto!

Points positifs: The hotel location is excellent as it is in a delightful neighbourhood which has numerous micro restaurants, bars, bakeries etc. It is also a five minute walk to the International Manga Museum and the Shogun Castle. The hotel and our room were scrupulously clean. In fact this is probably the cleanest hotel we have ever stayed in! We really liked the breakfast that can be ordered the night before and delivered to the room, delicious and so fresh. All the staff were outstanding ... super helpful, polite, kind and friendly. Special thanks to Sam and Onda! We wholeheartedly recommend this hotel and we are planning to stay here again when we visit marvellous Kyoto again next year.

Points positifs: I’ve stayed at Mugen before and Mugen+ was even more amazing. The house is beautiful and every little detail has been meticulously taken care of. The location is where real Kyoto residents live but also near the main palaces. But what will make me return to Mugen are the owners, whose warm welcome really touched me again and again. Arigatou gozaimasu !

Points positifs: It was a modern style hotel and clean. They also provided free drinks every day. I would like to come back here again if I am going to visit kyoto next time.
Points négatifs: It was very expensive compare to other hotels. I had to pay 26000yen only for 2 nights. That was the cheapest one I could get. Although it rated 4 stars but it is 3 stars (according to google). I hope they can adjust the price then it would be perfect.

Points positifs: The hotel was lovely, modern and well organised. The staff was very attentive and helpful. The hotel is located 5 minutes walk from the station which was very handy when travelling with luggages and for accessing local trains, the subway and buses to visit the city. Perfect urban spot.
Points négatifs: Although the room was nicely set up, there was not much space for big suitcases. It was a bit of a challenge to move furniture to have enough space to open the suitcase;)

Points positifs: Le Rihga Royal est sans doute un des meilleurs hôtels de Kyoto, cette chaine est probablement une des plus réputées du Japon. Son emplacement est idéal, à proximité de la gare de Kyoto -de 5min à pied. Malgré cela une navette gratuite est accessible entre la gare et l'hôtel. L'hôtel est entièrement rénové et offre un confort et un standing digne de son rang.
Points négatifs: Le choix du buffet du petit déjeuner est (très) vaste, dommage que les jus de fruits ne soient pas des jus de fruit frais et plus variés. Les viennoiseries peuvent être améliorées.

Points positifs: Room was nice size for the location. The breakfast had lots to offer on the buffet, the Japanese style breakfast was a nice change from the normal. Hotel shuttle was nice to get to the train station, was a big plus when it rained one day.

Points positifs: Brilliant little hotel tucked in a quiet corner about 5 minutes away from Kyoto station. There was a convenient shuttle bus that runs from the hotel to Kyoto station. The staff were superb, although some of them spoke limited English, always extremely polite and helpful. Fantastic little Nespresso machine and traditional tea set available in the room, with stylish decorations that really made us feel like we were in the heart of Japan. Close to mall food courts and plenty of convenient stores were stationed around the location. Great place to stay and recharge after a day of wandering about the city.
Points négatifs: Bathroom was on the smaller side, but expected for a standard Japanese hotel. Sometimes the temperature of the water in our showers mildly fluctuated from hotter water to colder water.

Points positifs: The hotel is right across from the train station. The room provides all the basic necessities in a very tight space. The bed was comfortable and the hotel was quiet at night to provide a good night sleep.
Points négatifs: The room seemed overpriced and the seller required the room be paid in advanced with a poor cancellation policy. The next time I book a room in Kyoto I will look further in advance and check the fine print better.
