The room was super clean and modern. Bed very comfortable. Great value and located right next to the glacier. Basic double rooms have an entire glass sliding for for a wall- which means you can hear everything outside. This is a spot for backpackers, so people are up late and loud.
The location is good for seeing the Franz Josef glacier. The key thing to know about Rainforest Retreat is that it's a sprawling complex-- one part serves backpackers and summer employees, and the other has higher end options. The higher end options--like the tree huts--aren't worth the money. We experienced the following challenges while there: - There was a major water shortage during our stay. This had happened before (google Franz Josef and water shortages and you'll see several hits), and the next town over (Fox Glacier) had running water. -The hotel staff blamed the water shortage on the city government (which was true), but did nothing for the guests during this time. Since they were shipping water in, the water wasn't potable/safe to drink, but we didn't find that out until we walked into reception. We had to buy our own bottled water to have drinking water. - The hotel staff also refused to do anything when our room had no running water-- they similarly blamed this on the city. However, that wasn't entirely true-- the backpackers had running water for their shower, and the maintenance people (who came 10 hours later) told us that a clogged water filter was why our particular hut had no water. The maintenance staff did eventually fix this so that we were able to shower once during our stay. - The walls between the units were paper thin. When our neighbors in the adjoining unit came home, we heard every movement they made, down to their lying down on the bed. - All of the furnishings were worn and had seen better days. In short, this was not worth $200 a night for a room. I would expect the hotel staff to ensure I have safe water to drink, that any maintenance issues are promptly dealt with (and that staff actually listened to their guests' concerns), and that the business tries to provide a good experience for their guests regardless of the external conditions. For somewhere nice, I would suggest you stay somewhere else, probably in the Fox Glacier township.
The front counter was very friendly and made the stay fantastic. The rooms were very cozy, and the location could not be better. Highly recommened! The WIFI is intermittent and parking is very difficult if the hotel is busy if your hire car is large - we recommend parking in the side street.
Our room was comfortable, a good size and well appointed. The location of the motel was ideal for exploring the Franz Josef glacier
Easy to find and central to Franz Josef attractions Friendly service and all the facilities clean and available. Not a luxury hotel but good basic accommodation
It is convenient to the Glaciers. The room is very small.
Excellent service and very good room. Breakfast good for price.
It was perfect for the price. Convenient location, the rooms were a good size and clean.
This hotel was a great location easily accessible to all the activities. The DVD player and selections at the front office was a nice touch. Being able to make food in the room was helpful.
We spent one night in Franz Josef on our West Coast road trip to Queenstown. The Bella Vista was clean, the room was a tad small but for one night as a place to sleep it on our way to else where it served it’s purpose. The beds were comfortable and the complex quiet at night so had a good nights sleep. Location is great, close to everything. Nothing special to report here, it is what it is.
We stayed in the room with bath and shower. It is very basic but clean. It is one step up from camping. It did have a refrigerator. The room was small. There was no ice available to either use or purchase on site. They, along with many places in NZ should invest in screens for their windows and doors.
Staff were helpfull in agreeing that price quoted on line was unrealistic relative to the facilities in the hotel. Hotel facilities and appearance are dated and badly need refurbishment.
Great location and mountain views. Bathroom was a bit small and could do with upgrading.
the view of glacier from bedroom window No spa facilities, restaurant on site not open, reception on site not open, no internet on site - could be due to time of year of stay.
localization Bathroom. Bad shower, the bathroom was flooded.
Probably biggest hotel in frank josef. Right in the centre of town. Comfertable rooms. Good view of Glacier from some rooms.
Hotel situated in a great location near to the glacier with lots of good restaurants within metres. Hotel room very well equipped and very warm which was welcoming as it was freezing when we arrived. Hotel staff were so friendly and helpful too. Definitely stay there again when visiting the area.
IMHO, hotel is a very overpriced - i paid 170NZD for the room, while in Queenstown i paid just 250NZD for two bedroom/bathroom apartments at Oak Shores with lakeview! Here for company of three i had to book two rooms so i end up paying 340NZD. I would say that this hotel needs serious bathroom upgrade - everything is very old and outdated. Overpriced and rooms need upgrade
Staff friendly, helpful and courteous. Location close to the glacier was excellent for views of beautiful scenery both at sunset and sunrise.
Large youth hostile enviroment , huge kitchen facilities well stocked. Very quiet and overall clean. No one was there to check in, but they left the key in an Envelope so Not a problem. But there were no parking spots left when we arrived. There were people in front of the hostile camping in the street. The doors were left open to the patio which flowed to the lounge kitchen and into hallways with rooms and bathrooms. Thus it seemed it was open access to all who cared to walk in From the street.
